Unboxing Match! December 2013 Ipsy vs. Birchbox

This hasn't been my favorite month for either of these. After the super packed bags and boxes I got last month I guess I shouldn't be too surprised of the slight let down this month. Also it was surprise that my Ipsy turned up quicker than my Birchbox, which seemed to get lost in the mail forever. I checked the tracking page daily and it seemed like it took a nice tour of California and then was lost at the post office for awhile coming a feel week after the projected delivery date. I was almost scared I wouldn't even get it this month. Nevertheless, here they are, a little later than usual, but still here.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with these services, Ipsy and Birchbox are two beauty subscription boxes that come monthly. Both of these cost $10 a month and each arrive with 5-6 different goodies ranging from sad little foil packets to full size products!

Initial Reaction: Yay lipsticks...but all in colors I already have. Not sure how I feel about the bag, online it looked a lot more matte but it's really shiny. I think it will still be a nice bag to hold pens and little things in my purse though.
1. $5 Starrily Nail Polish in Bzzz Bzzz is a mini bottle. Sorry this is kind of ugly and this bottle is TINY. I don't have anything in my collection like this...and for good reason. I'll need to test it out over something but just looking at it, I'm not sold.
2. $7.50 POP Beauty Bright Up Your Life Eye Shadow Trio in Smokin' Hot is a sample trio of their full sized palette. I really don't need these colors, or eye shadows in general at all, I'm very disappointed with this.
3. $16 Be a Bombshell The One Stick in Flustered is full sized. I did love the lip crayon I got from them before however I don't understand what this is suppose to be. I think it's suppose to be primarily a cream blush but this red is so bright I feel like I would look like a clown. Also this product is HUGE, it kind of reminds me of a police nightstick thingy, so I guess it would be a weapon to carry around in my purse??
4. $4 NYX Extra Creamy Round Lipstick in Sunflower is full sized. I already own one of these and absolutely adore it so II was excited to try a different color. In the tube it looks like a pretty cherry red, however when I tried it on it was more of a red orange which I don't think is so flattering for me, maybe in the summer when I'm a little tanner this would work.
5. $4 Andrea Strip Lash in black is full sized. This annoys me, they are pretty ridiculous lashes which I wouldn't want to wear besides for a costume so this seems like a waste.
Approximate Value: $36.50

Initial Reaction: Ooh I love the special box design this month! I hope they start doing this for every box with the theme printed on every time.
1. $5 TOCCA Crema da Mano Luxe in the most delicious cucumber grapefruit smell. I was always a huge fan of cucumber melon growing up until everyone loved it so the smell just started getting nauseating so this is a refreshing remix. With my hands being unusually dry this winter and still being on the hunt for a good hand cream this came to me at the perfect time!
2. $1.50 Lulu Organics® Lavender + Clary Sage Hair Powder, through the packaging it smells good but since it isn't resealable I don't want to open it until I want to use it. I've reduced my hair washing to twice a week now so I've been relying more on dry shampoos to get that third (sometimes even fourth) day hair to be socially acceptable so I'm interested in trying this powder which is a more eco-friendly option to my aerosols.
3. $1.25 Grand Central Beauty S.M.A.R.T. Skin Perfecting™ Polisher, I've really been meaning to try a peel/chemical exfoliant so I'm excited to give this cute little bottle a go.
4. $2 Secret Agent Beauty Secret Lip Affair Nourishing & Plumping Lip Gloss. I was hesitant about this at first, it looked brown and murky but when I squeezed some out it was actually a nice earthy natural color and smells deliciously of lychee with a nice tingle.
5. $2 twistband™ Speciality Pack, I just got the one, but I love this hair ties and this is what I use exclusively for my hair so I'm thrilled to get another one and in a color I don't have!
6. Phone Screen Cleaner. I guess this doesn't really count as an item but I wasn't sure where else to talk about it. But they are promoting their mobile app and they sent this cute little sticky screen cleaner.
Approximate Value: $11.75

I'm not going to lie, I'm pretty unimpressed with Ipsy and the repeat brands. Is it just me or are they only doing pretty cheap brands now? I almost want to unsubscribe...almost, but I won't. Even though Birchbox just BARELY made it over the $10 value, I actually got to say I liked Birchbox better this month. All the sample sizes were pretty small which is what lowered the value but they are all solid products I'm excited to try out. The MVP is the Tocca hand cream I just can't get over the smell of it!

What did you get this month in your subscription services?
