New Years Resolutions: How Am I Doing?

The month of January has really flown by, hot question of the moment is how am I do on my resolutions! I'm proud to report that I believe I've been doing very well, pretty much nailed 4/5 and I think I've really formed the habit to be able to continue this for the rest of the year. For those interested on reading up on the five things I've vowed to do, you will find a more in-depth look into exactly what each resolution entails. Now onto my progress report!

Review: Essie Resort Fling 2014 Collection

Are we all so excited for my 'creative' photo set designs?? This collection really put me in the beach mood so I'm going to start making more of an effort to make my pictures more appealing annnd I may actually start using a real SLR instead of my iPhone (which I must say does quite a nice job anyways)!
The reviews for this collection haven't been great, but I couldn't resist not doing a review, enter mini bottles! I purchased this cube for $13 off Amazon in order to bring you this review on the Essie Resort Fling 2014 collection. Full sized bottles will run you $8.50 each in salons and beauty stores, so I thought this cube was quite the deal. Right off the bat the colors aren't something I was crazy about, they were nice colors but very pedestrian (read on and see how I change my hand!). I was most intrigued by the cantaloupe-y/orange creamsicle shade, that is this collection's namesake, as it was a pretty color that would be lovely year round. We are doing three finger swatches today, the thought of subjecting my poor chemically assaulted nails to more polish was just too horrible.

UPDATE: Project Pan! & Project Pan REMIX

Brace yourselves, this is about to be quite a lengthy post.
I know it doesn't LOOK done but there's just no way I can finish that blue. So I am deeming this product finished.

NYNS: Letting Go

The new year is a great time to reflect on oneself and really see where you stand in life. Today we are getting a little philosophical (and a little new age-y, bear with me) in this last installment of NYNS and I'm providing some tips of how to let go of negative experiences and possibly be a little happier in life. Clearly there's been a theme of adopting minimalism and just "feel good" types of things so I thought it was appropriate to culminate this month of advice giving by just laying everything out on the table and leaving it there

Mani Monday #5: elf

At this point I'm really missing nail art, this monochromatic manicures are getting to me, however we will pursue! This week I am testing out elf nail polish! I know quite the dive away from my expensive nail polish but felt the need to start tossing in some cheaper options! This particular color I used came from one of their 14 polish cubes that run for $10, but basically it cost 71 cents. Their most expensive nail polish is $2, so bottom line, an incredibly affordable line.

Mani Monday is a weekly feature where I put a different brand of nail polish to a 7 day test. I chronicle my activities for each day with thoughts of things that could potentially attribute to chipping my polish. I use the same base and top coat each week, and this week applied one coat of elf's Mod Mauve. There will be a full list and links to all previous Mani Mondays at the end of this post.

UnBoxing Match! January 2014 Ipsy vs. Birchbox

(Sorry for that weird yellow lighting I don't know what was going on) What the heck Birchbox?? Why are you always so slow now?? Originally planned to have this up a week ago but Birchbox took soo long to get here, apparently going for a trip all around the bay is the new shipping route?! This makes no sense to me whatsoever. But thank you to both for redeeming yourselves this month because seriously what happened last month?! Anyways onto the most exciting time of the month, subscription box time!!

For those of you who are unfamiliar with these services, Ipsy and Birchbox are two beauty subscription boxes that come monthly. Both of these cost $10 a month and each arrive with 5-6 different goodies ranging from sad little foil packets to full size products!

NYNS: Spend Less, Get More

Disclaimer: This post is by no means sponsored, I am not gaining anything from mentioning these programs. These are just some things I have discovered to help support my makeup buying addiction that work for me.
This week on NYNS, we explore the world of little tips to help save money when it comes to makeup. It's no secret that makeup is insanely expensive so I am here to offer tips to those out there who can't help be keep buying. There are dozens of tricks out there of making your makeup do double duty, or lay in wait and pounce on sales, I am taking a different approach and just laying down some thoughts on how you can just shop smarter and save a little money 365 days in the year.

Review: BH Cosmetics 6 Color Concealer & Corrector Palette

I recently hauled this, I was intrigued because I've never dabbled into color correcting for concealing. Conveniently my skin has been throwing a temper tantrum lately so I had plenty of redness to experiment with covering up. This palette I picked up is the BH COsmetics 6 Color Concealer & Corrector Palette for $6, it comes in three shades, Light, Medium and Dark, and I picked up the Medium palette. Each one comes with six different color, three concealer shades (light, medium, dark) and three color correcting the shades. I find that the middle concealer shade is my perfect skin match (keep in mind that my arm is much tanner than my face is), the lightest color is great under my eyes and in that nose crease, so I can imagine the darkest shade will be great in summer (you can already tell by how it fades away on my much tanner arm). The color correcting shades come in a salmon which neutralizes blue-green (think dark under eye), yellow which neutralizes blue-violet (under eyes again and veins), and green with neutralizes red (redness and acne).

Loco for Coconuts!

Add caption
You all saw this coming, time for a post dedicated to my holy grail product: coconut oil! For a cool $5 a bottle (if you're going fancy and picking it up from Trader Joe's like I do) you get a hefty bottle of this beautiful magical goo in a jar. At room temperature this stuff is a solid which melts into a lovely oil as it is warmed up in your hands.

Mani Monday #4: Color Club

This week for Mani Monday I tested out Color Club which retails for about $4-5 and I've found huge collections of them at Bed, Bath, and Beyond, but I was first introduced to this brand through Birchbox. This is a fairly new brand to me, I own a few bottles but honestly don't reach for it much so I won't be able to provide much of a generalization at the end. Mani Monday is a weekly feature where I put a different brand of nail polish to a 7 day test. I chronicle my activities for each day with thoughts of things that could potentially attribute to chipping my polish. I use the same base and top coat each week, and this week applied two coats of Color Club Soft As Cashmere. I've been having manicure struggle lately but I must say not bad this week (by my standards). There will be a full list and links to all previous Mani Mondays at the end of this post.

What's in my Trash?! Empties #2

Another (two) months, another empties 'haul'. Here's the latest edition of What's in my Trash this time featuring much more makeup products, as well as a whole lot of foil sample packets. I really made it a point to use up those little packets, I mean they are packaged for one time use, why wasn't I just using them up already?? As usual there will be pictures below, let's get right into this.

Review: Rimmel Stay Matte Powder

Life Lesson of the Day: Rimmel is NOT sold at Bed, Bath and Beyond. I drove there all excited because they always have stocked shelves since not a lot of people are aware that they sell cosmetics there now, but after combing the shelves, not one Rimmel product! In the end I found this guy at Walgreens. Basically I've heard a lot of good stuff about the Rimmel Stay Matte Powder I was eager to put it to the test. Unfortunately there is limit color choices that ranged in the lighter pinky shades so I had to settle with the transparent option.

Post HAUL-iday Extravaganza!

So I definitely took advantage of some after holiday sales, as well as when purchasing gifts for others a few items for me MAY have snuck into the here's a little collective haul of everything I've picked up in about the last two months. I'm also going to throw in a few of my makeup things I got for Christmas just because I'm so excited about them and need to share. Some close up and swatches are at the end of the post as usual!

NYNS: My Juice Cleanse Experience

This one is a slightly different NYNS installment, instead of offering some tips I thought I would share my experience with something new and that is my dip into juicing! Basically I got it into my head that I wanted to try a one day juice cleanse (despite the epic failure that was my last cleanse "diet") but in the hopes of finding a juice I would actually like thought I'd just go for it.

For this one day juice program I will be following there are six juices, one juice every two hours, and a big cup of water after every single juice. This is the site I consulted for all of my juice recipes, just trying every one of those juices in one day. I'm hoping at the end of the day I can at least feel healthier and hopefully find at least one recipe that I like enough to drink more on a normal basis.

Mani Monday #3: OPI

Welcome to Mani Monday! This week I tested out OPI which retails for about $8 everywhere. I own about 20 bottles of OPI so I will be able to provide some insight into the general quality of the brand. OPI was actually the first brand of nicer nail polish I started using so it's been a couple years spent with it now. Mani Monday is a weekly feature where I put a different brand of nail polish to a 7 day test. I chronicle my activities for each day with thoughts of things that could potentially attribute to chipping my polish. I use the same base and top coat each week, and this week applied two coats of OPI Got The Blues For Red. Manicure fail this week. Left hand looks pretty flawless, the right hand was a slight hot mess, but it is what it is. There will be a full list and links to all previous Mani Mondays at the end of this post.

7 Under $7: Lips

Welcome to the second installment of my 7 Under $7 series. This time I'm going to talk about lip products. I tried to come up with a variety of products, ranging from glosses, liners, etc. but honestly in my experience there are a TON of affordable lip products out there that are really comparable to the $20+ high end products, so here are just some of my favorite picks at the drugstore.

NYNS: Decluttering Closets

Happy New Years Everyone! As cliche as it is I just have to say it, 2013 passed by SO quickly, it was such a big year of changes with a lot of highs and lows, if you knew me in real life you would really understand why I'm so happy for this fresh new year. Anyways, I wrote earlier about my own personal resolutions, and thought it would be fun to put together a few posts to inspire others to maybe pick up a new habit, or make new goals for themselves this year. As I explained before I've never been all about strict resolutions because I am a glutton for punishing myself when I don't follow through and it just always ends up a disaster, so instead I'm going to put forth some potential lifestyle changes that I believe everyone should think about and partake in. So this new series "New Years New Self" is all about opening up to new ideas to live your life differently.

First up is embracing the idea of decluttering your life, more specifically I have closets in mind, or just wardrobes in general. One big source of anxiety in my life really has to be clothes. From picking out an outfit everyday, to just staring at the pileup of clothing articles that just litter my room I've come up with a few suggestions to help ameliorate this situation.

Uncovering the Secrets of Foundation

This is a major pet peeve of mine when I see people out there with faces a good 2-3 shades lighter than the rest of their body. So that is one topic I will be covering today, picking the right color for your face! Next I will do a quick over view of picking the right kind of foundation for your skin type, however you can find a more in depth look into different foundation types here. Finally there will be a wrap up of tips for how to help prolong the wear of your foundation throughout the day! Let's get started.

7 Under $7: Eyes

I've decided to start a new series where I will seek out good quality products that cost under $7 for different areas of your face. While I do understand the need to splurge for certain things once in awhile, I also feel you can find great inexpensive alternatives. I will admit that originally this was suppose to be a 5 under $5, however I discovered many of my favorites ended up being $6.99 so I decided to adjust and now I am able to share two more products for the sake of keeping the repetition alive. Obviously I am omitting taxes and these are based off prices either that I've seen in my local store or found online the $7 applies to the price you would see on the tag.

Mani Monday #2: butter London

On our second installment of Mani Monday, this week I put butter London nail polishes to the test! These retail for around $14, definitely more on the high end of things, and I own about 10 different shades so I will be able to provide some insight into the general quality of the polishes and not just this particular color. If you didn't catch this series last week I did a feature on Essie nail polishes and got some impressive results. For those who are tuning in for the first time, Mani Monday is a weekly feature where I put a different brand of nail polish to a 7 day test. I chronicle my activities for each day with thoughts of things that could potentially attribute to chipping my polish. This polish is a lovely dusty brownish rose(I know I suck at describing colors and it looks brick red/brown in the pictures because of the yellow lighting) by the name of Toff. I used the same OPI Nail Strengthening base coat, followed by just one coat of Toff (this stuff was so buttery and nice I didn't need a second one), and finished with one coat of OPI Top Coat. Much cleaner application this time, so let's just get right into my week!

December 2013 UNfavorites

This month was spent revisiting a lot of neglected problems, and for a few I rediscovered just why I've left them sitting there collecting dust. There has been a lot of makeup hauling but I was pretty careful about obsessively looking up reviews and swatches so thankfully nothing that I've spent my money on (recently) has been a miss.

December 2013 Favorites

Stepped up my game in favorites this month. There were a ton of sales and gifts sets that I just couldn't resist and I have found a whole lot of new favorites this way! I tried to pick just the best of the best and keep it under 10, otherwise I would be here for a VERY long time gushing about a million and one products.

New Year, New Me

Normally I don't make new year's resolutions because I always feel horribly guilty when I inevitably change them. So this year instead of setting some ridiculous weight loss goal or something, I'm going to set some easier lifestyle changes to focus more on my mental health. I think these will be easier to honor because they are things I've been on again off again doing, so now is a good time as every to make a resolution to stick with these habits.
