Loco for Coconuts!

You all saw this coming, time for a post dedicated to my holy grail product: coconut oil! For a cool $5 a bottle (if you're going fancy and picking it up from Trader Joe's like I do) you get a hefty bottle of this beautiful magical goo in a jar. At room temperature this stuff is a solid which melts into a lovely oil as it is warmed up in your hands.

  • This is a fantastic makeup remover. This is a great option for those who are trying to incorporate more natural products into their beauty routine. Coconut oil breaks down even the most stubborn waterproof makeup and is incredibly gentle so there's no worry about getting some in your eye.
  • Coconut oil helps promote growth in your eyelashes! Warm some up between your fingers and smooth it on over your lashes (even eyebrows!) and let it soak overnight. This natural oil is packed with vitamins, minerals and lengthening agents that will moisturize and enlarge those lashes.
  • Got scars or stretch marks? Coconut oil is ultra moisturizing and will help gradually lighten these marks over time when rubbed on daily.
  • Melted coconut oil rubbed into your roots will help re-hydrate weak and dry hair. Let it soak for three hours and then wash it out completely.
  • A dab of coconut oil will also help tame frizz and rein in fly aways.
  • Coconut oil is my product of choice as an all over moisturizer. It can also be mixed with some sugar or salt to create a lovely body scrub.
  • The moisture benefits just don't end, works great as a natural lip balm too rubbed on your lips.
  • A spoonful of coconut oil a day boosts your immune system and aids in weight loss.
  • Coconut oil is a great alternative to replace vegetable oil or butter in recipes. It's also dairy free so a great way to help turn any recipe vegan!
  • Chocked full of health benefits coconut oil really helps strengthen your body against all sorts of bugs and nasties when eaten.
  • Stiff leather shoes? Coconut oil can address this too, wipe the shoes with some coconut oil which will help soften the leather and break them in faster.
  • Not just for people, coconut oil is great for your pooch too! A spoonful of coconut oil for your dog will help improve digestion and metabolism, promote a smooth glossy coat, and will even combat bad breath!
So just why is this oil so good for you? Previously studies on coconut oil shot it down stating that it was unhealthy and bad for you, however those studies are done with refined and hydrogenated coconut oil and not the unrefined, virgin and organic coconut oil which is found almost everywhere now. That is definitely important to note, before you pick up any old jar check to make sure it is virgin coconut oil. Coconut oil is composed of fatty acids that are about 90% saturated, before you let that alarm you know that these fatty acids are composed almost entirely of Medium Chain Triglycerides. What does that mean exactly? It means that these acids go straight from digestion to the liver where they are turned into ketone bodies that gives off quick bursts of energies. So unlike the fats we have grown up being told to stay away from, coconut oil does not just sit on your body but is actually burned off quickly to provide energy. Another component of coconut oil is the fatty acid of Lauric Acid which is used in your body to kill all sorts of bacteria, fungi and viruses. So while people see coconut oil and just think fat, they are unaware that these are 'good for you' fats that work hard to run your body instead of bog it down.
