UnBoxing Match! March 2014 Ipsy vs. Birchbox

I was so surprised (and thrilled) that these both shipped on the same day!! Getting here, as usual Ipsy was much faster, Birchbox decided to take its usual lap around the country and come in a full week later. I unintentionally peeked this month for Ipsy, I clicked into the Glam Room not knowing it was already updated so I already know what I'm getting and was half disappointed, more into that later. Fingers crossed the Birchbox redeems itself this month, normally it doesn't let me down but the past two months have been in a slump.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with these services, Ipsy and Birchbox are two beauty subscription boxes that come monthly. Both of these cost $10 a month and each arrive with 4-6 different goodies ranging from sad little foil packets to full size products! I would say that typically Birchbox consistently delivers high-end skincare and hair care products with a sprinkling of makeup while Ipsy goes more for the mid-range items and is normally a lot of makeup items.

Initial Reaction: This bag is adorable, I love the design but I don't like how plasticky it feels. This will be a perfect electronic cable bag though since it's the perfect size the material feels like it will be slightly water resistant in case of accidental spillage But why are there are only four products this month?!
1. $5 Marvelous Moxie Lipstick in Get Ready is a tra size. This is my favorite lipstick so I was happy to get this but this is about the only thing I'm pleased with in my bag this month.
2. $5 Pacifica Body Butter in Indian Coconut Nectar is a travel size product. I do NOT use lotions (I use coconut oil to moisturize) so getting all these lotion samples is starting to get real annoying.
3. $16 Be a Bombshell Eyeshadow Quad in Bora Bora is a full sized product. I must say that these colors are beautiful and I don't mind getting this but not super excited either.
4. $10 Missha M Perfect Cover BB Cream in shade 31 is a travel sized product. I have a feeling this will be really greasy on my face since it has 42 SPF. I'll give it a try anyways, the shade seems to be a bit off for my skin though.
Approximate Value: $36.00

Initial Reaction: Mixed expectations when I first opened the box but I ended up quite pleased this month! Some things look full sized and other things are very generous sample sizes!
1. $2.50 Illume Go Be Lovely Lavish Hand Creme in Thai Lily is a sample sized product. I was really excited for this, the packaging is so pretty, but the sample size is tiny! It's one of those tear offs so basically I have to use it all at once or risk it drying up.
2. $3 Air Repair Rescue Balm All-Purpose Skin Salve and Lip Balm is a sample size. Normally this isn't something I would be happy to receive but this winter has been awful on my lips and it has never been that chapped. I'm happy to get this and hopefully it will help out!
3. $20 INIKA Certified Organic Eye Liner in Green Lagoon is a full sized product. I received my box the day after St. Patrick's day and this would have been perfect to wear! This green is gorgeous, only recently have I gotten into colored eyeliner so I'm thrilled to have this to play with.
4. $4.50 Keims Cleanshine Energizing Shampoo is a sample sized product. This smells so nice and normally I don't like getting shampoo since it is typically in those foil packets that do nothing, but this is a very generous sample size that will take me quite some time to get through so I am quite pleased with this item too.
5. $3 Tea Forté® minteas is a single tin (retails as a three pack). This I'm the least thrilled about getting, I don't really eat mints nor am I a fan of green tea. But the tin is adorable and this will get passed onto some for sure.
*6. $20 Lacqua & Co Nail polish. I'm not including this in the total value simply because this was an extra I paid for so I knew it was coming. I'm loving these skinny nail polish bottles though (like Julep), they look really nice and is a great space saver! I'm excited to have these to test out and let's be real, I was sold when I saw the light purple which is a favorite shade of mine to rock on the nails.
Approximate Value: $33.00

I got some nice things this month but I must say that Birchbox is the winner even before the add on I paid extra for! Ipsy had one item I was truly excited about (the lipstick) while I was basically thrilled with everything I received in Birchbox this month. The shipping time still drives me crazy though, I noticed this month Birchbox switched to a new distributor so I'm hoping this month was their time to work through the kinks and it will get better next month.

What did you get this month in your subscription services?
