UnBoxing Match! April 2014 Ipsy vs. Birchbox

Ipsy came at the perfect time, I was having a really rough day and the tracking information hadn't been updating (it still said it was sitting in SoCal) so it was a great surprise to find this in my mailbox that day! I got really excited watching the Birchbox sneak peek this month and I definitely had my fingers crossed for a product or two that I was hoping to get! As usual Birchbox took forever, but this time I was teased by getting tracking information very early but then a week later I got another email stating they sent me the wrong information and that my box was only just shipped...get it together Birchbox, the waiting drives me crazy!

For those of you who are unfamiliar with these services, Ipsy and Birchbox are two beauty subscription boxes that come monthly. Both of these cost $10 a month and each arrive with 4-6 different goodies ranging from sad little foil packets to full size products! I would say that typically Birchbox consistently delivers high-end skincare and hair care products with a sprinkling of makeup while Ipsy goes more for the mid-range items and is normally a lot of makeup items.

Ipsy
Initial Reaction: I'm not crazy about this bag, I don't like this awkward square shape I feel like I should be keeping a CD inside it or something...Otherwise first peek into it and I'm thrilled!
1. $15 Urban Decay 24/7 Velvet Glide-On Eye Pencil in Black Velvet is a travel size product. This is the first thing I saw and I am THRILLED by this. I love UD and their 24/7 Glide-On pencils so I was even more excited to get this one in black which is basically the only color I wear. This was all I needed to be excited about my Ipsy.
2. $19 Cailyn Tinted Lip Balm in Apple Pink is a full sized product. This is actually the first Cailyn product I have received so I'm interested to see how it works out. The color is a nice neutral pink so definitely pleased with this.
3. $4 City Color White Gold Shadow & Highlight Mousse is a full sized product. I'm excited to try this. the color looks beautiful and the jar is adorable.
4. $19.50 dr brandt microdermabrasion is a sample sized product. I love this brand and I love scrubs so I think this one is going to be a winner!
5. $5 Big Sexy Hair Root Pump Volumizing Spray Mousse is a sample sized product. Only thing I wasn't excited about. I don't use a lot of hair product and definitely don't touch mousses or hair sprays so this is going to get passed on to someone. But still it's a generous size and rounds out a very awesome bag.
Approximate Value: $62.50

Birchbox
Initial Reaction: I got one item I was wishing for, but I still wish I got the Anastasia brow gel! I love the blue tissue paper too...it's the little things guys. I seem to getting more food now, I hope that isn't a continuing trend because I'd rather get products rather than a snack that I probably won't end up eating.
1. $5 theBalm's How About Them Apples? in Apple Pie is a sample sized product. I was hoping for this product, I mean the packaging is adorable! And I was also interested in this. I love theBalm, I love apples, and I love cheek products so this seemed perfect for me.
2. $3.25 Color Club Gala's Gems in Aquarmarine Azulino is one bottle out of a four piece collection. I was hoping for that Tiffany's inspired shade, but this sky blue is beautiful too. I always like getting nail polish and I love the little line of mini bottles I have going on in my collection. Mini bottles are also perfect because it's an amount of nail polish that a person can feasibly finish before the formula goes bad, so this is a win.
3. $2 KIND Healthy Grain Bar in Maple Pumpkin Seed is one bar from a box of four. I'm not crazy about getting food in my box (I signed up for beauty products here not snacks!), but KIND bars are my favorite snack (Coconut Almond FTW!), this flavor though I didn't like. I don't like pumpkin seeds and maple is not my favorite flavor so I took one bite and the rest went into the trash. The valuation is based on what I've seen individual bars retail for in stores.
4. $8 Paula's Choice RESIST Anti-Aging Clear Skin Hydrator is a sample sized product. I've spent a lot of time curating my perfect skin routine and while washes and scrubs I will try without hesitation, moisturizer is not something I mess with. This was a product that got passed on immediately.
5. $2 Gilchrist & Soames Spa Therapy Body Wash is a sample sized product. I was very disappointed in this. I hate the smell. This also went into the trash it didn't seem fair to subject anyone else to this horrible thing.
Approximate Value: $20.25

Birchbox delivered an okay box this month but I must say that overall Ipsy has won April. Seriously just that UD eyeliner alone I am beyond stoked about. I was disappointed in most of the things I got in Birchbox, but my two favorites (nail polish and theBalm) lessened the blow considerably. Very excited to see what next month brings and hoping that Birchbox steps up its game! I'm also itching to try out a new subscription service, and lusting after a three month PopSugar subscription, any suggestions?

What did you get this month in your subscription services?

  1. Hey! I have only had Birchbox for 3 months (I've had Ipsy for over a year) and Ipsy has always beat out Birchbox for me lol As far as another sub box I really like Glossybox its a less than a pop sugar box and they have pretty great items each month. (I have a few past months reviews on my blog) http://thefemininefiles.com Good luck and nice comparison

    1. Thanks! Definitely one to consider, I just purchased a Beauty Box 5 subscription after Facebook tempted me to a free box code but I checked out your March review and it looked great!

  2. So jealous you got the blush sample! I got the same Color Club polish and am wearing it now...you'll love it! I, too, was hoping for Breakfast At..., but I'm super content with the blue.

    1. I'm so tempted to buy the full palette now! I'm excited for the blue! I realized I have a million mints in my collection but not a single light blue that I love, can't wait to try it out!
