UnBoxing Match! June 2014 Ipsy vs. Birchbox vs. Beauty Box 5

I'm in awe, this has never happened before. Ipsy, Birchbox AND Beauty Box 5 all arrived on the same day! Not only the same day but RIDICULOUSLY early, like June 10th! This was the greatest surprise ever after a very bad and very stressful day. I was only expecting BB5 to come since Ipsy and Birchbox hadn't even sent out tracking codes yet!

For those of you who are unfamiliar with these services, Ipsy and Birchbox are two custom beauty subscription boxes that come monthly. Both of these cost $10 a month and each arrive with 4-6 different goodies ranging from sad little foil packets to full size products! Beauty Box 5 costs a little more at $12 and delivers the same amount of goodies. I would say that typically Birchbox consistently delivers high-end skincare and hair care products with a sprinkling of makeup while Ipsy goes more for the mid-range items and is normally a lot of makeup items and Beauty Box 5 is mostly drugstore.

Ipsy
Initial Reaction: I "unboxed" this one in front of my mom and she immediately snatched the bag once it was empty, I think this one is getting kidnapped from me.
1. $15 Be A Bombshell Lash Out Mascara is a full sized product. Ooh yay another mascara...not. Frankly I'm quite sick of getting mascaras as well as this brand. Except for a lip crayon, I haven't liked anything else that I've gotten because I just think it is poor quality.
2. $2 Marc Anthony Dream Waves Beach Spray is a travel sized product. So normally I don't like hair care products because except for dry shampoo nothing really goes into my hair, but I took a sniff of this and I'm in love. It smells like coconuts with a hint of sunscreen, just beach day in a bottle basically. I haven't tried it out yet but the smell alone I'm already hooked.
3. $5 NYX Butter Gloss in Eclair is a full sized product. I own a lot of butter glosses and for some reason not this color! I love these things, the smell, the pigmentation, the formulation, just everything so I'm excited to get another one of these guys in my life.
4. $7 Jesse's Girl Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner is a full sized product. I love my Stila Stay All Day but I don't love the price, so I'm excited that I got this in my bag to try out and maybe I will have a new affordable favorite!
5. $9 OLEHENRIKSEN truth to go wipes is a travel sized product. Recently I've seen a bunch of people talk about these so I'm quite pleased I get to try them myself because they are ridiculously expensive for makeup wipes! Stay tuned in an empties or favorites on my thoughts on these.
Approximate Value: $38.00

Birchbox
Initial Reaction: Meh. (but just wait and see how that changes, there's a clear trend in this box)
1. $8 Benefit They're Real! Mascara is a sample sized product. I must admit I saw the packaging and I thought I got the eyeliner at first, but then I was a little disappointed...but then I realized it was my favorite mascara! Granted I still have a full tube unopened I'm glad I have even more now!
2. $5 Number 4 Super Comb Prep & Protect is a sample sized product. Again I was annoyed at getting hair care but then I actually tried it out and it was awesome! It made my hair shiny without looking greasy or piecey, so I'm a huge fan.
3. $5 Evologie Stay Clear Cleanser is a sample sized product. I was excited to see this! I got a sample for some acne spot treatment from this brand months ago and really liked it. I'm addicted to skin care and cleansers so I just know I'm going to enjoy this.
4. $8 Cynthia Rowley Beauty Creamy Lip Stain in Valentine is a sample sized product. I should be mad about how tiny this is, but it is SO cute that I just can't. The color is really pretty too, this is the perfect clutch sized lippie.
5. $5 English Laundry Signature for Her is a sample sized product. Ugh perfume sample. Not a fan of the smell, and this is the only thing that totally missed for me with this box.
Approximate Value: $31.00

Beauty Box 5
Initial Reaction: Naaaaaaaail polish! Also all these values I'm kind of guessing at it was hard to price these because most of them didn't have weights on them so I couldn't do the math.
1. $5 Nicka K New York Nail Polish in Ripe Apple is a full sized product. I was hoping to get this one over the lilac since I already have my favorite purples that I don't like to stray from.
2. $2 Organix Coconut Water Shampoo & Conditioner is a sample sized product. I must say normally I hate foil packages especially when it's shampoo and conditioner, but this particular one I've actually been eyeing at the store so I'm happy to get to try it out.
3. $5 Glam Natural Mascara is a sample sized product. A brand I've never heard of and yet another mascara. I wasn't happy to get this at all.
4. $10 Eslor Introductory Collection Calming Kit is a sample sized product. Foil packets! This valuation is probably way off, but either way I'm not pleased to see this either. It's not enough for me to actually know whether or not this system would work for me, so it's a pointless sample.
5. $1 Vita Bath Body Wash is a sample sized product. Does anyone else remember one of these guys in my empties? The smell is way sweet I wasn't crazy about it and I'm less than thrilled to see another one coming back to me.
Approximate Value: $23.00

This one is really surprising to me, but Birchbox wins this month! Initially I wasn't crazy about it but once I actually looked through the products and testing them out I was really impressed. Ipsy comes in a second, the sizes of products were really nice but overall I was more excited with Birchbox. The value of all my boxes were significantly lower this month but I'm still pleased with what I got.

What did you get this month in your subscription services?

  2. I haven't subscribed to Ipsy since March- I had been a subscriber since they launched. I was really sick and tired of the Be A Bombshell and other cheap garbage they were throwing in every now and then. It seemed like they were finally free of the Be a Bombshell curse, but I guess I was wrong. :( The bag is super cute though, and Ole Henriksen is always awesome to get! Birchbox always wins for me because their points system just can't be beat!

    1. I'm SO sick of that brand. But definitely! My Birchboxes have been pretty bad lately but I stay on because I buy so much stuff off their shop!

  3. I get all three of these boxes, I found this month Ipsy was my favorite followed by Birchbox. Beauty Box 5 always seems to lag a bit behind.
