UnBoxing Match! July 2014 Ipsy vs. Birchbox vs. Beauty Box 5

I was a naughty peeker this month but I just couldn't wait! I can tell you I had mixed feelings about the goodies I was getting. Ipsy looked promising and Birchbox had a great variety of products but nothing I was super excited about. I was a little annoyed that the Beauty Box 5 preview was for a drugstore mascara but I'm discovering it's usually more of a miss for that anyways. If it weren't for that coupon code there is no way I would have picked up that subscription. I'm definitely canceling it after the year is up and it's still up in the air whether I will try another service.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with these services, Ipsy and Birchbox are two custom beauty subscription boxes that come monthly. Both of these cost $10 a month and each arrive with 4-6 different goodies ranging from sad little foil packets to full size products! Beauty Box 5 costs a little more at $12 and delivers the same amount of goodies. I would say that typically Birchbox consistently delivers high-end skincare and hair care products with a sprinkling of makeup while Ipsy goes more for the mid-range items and is normally a lot of makeup items and Beauty Box 5 is mostly drugstore.

Initial Reaction: I am so obsessed with this bag! Is it crazy that I'm considering using it as a pool clutch in Vegas?? The color, the just needs to be in my life always!
1. $8.50 Models Own Nail Polish is a full sized product in the color Red Sea. I mean the last thing I really need is another nail polish (especially in red) but I still think this is a plus in my bag. I am a fan of chunky flake glitter and this is definitely a finish I don't have.
2. $6 bareMinerals 5-in-1 BB Advanced Performance Cream Eyeshadow Broad Spectrum SPF 15 is a sample size in Divine Wine.  I was hoping for the eyeshadow duo, but either way a bareMinerals product is a bareMinerals product! One day when I start doing makeup again, it will be fun to play with this!
3. $8 Clear Clinic Laboratories Vanished Clear Spot Treatment is a sample sized product. Conveniently I was running out of my spot treatment so I'm glad another sample has been sent my way! I'm really not too picky as long as it works, kind of, so definitely this is my favorite so far in this bag!
4. $1 Hang Ten Dark Tanning Oil SPF 08 is a sample sized product. So this was an either or product meaning it would be this or sunblock so I'm glad it's the tanning oil. This I will definitely use.
5. ~$5 Lord & Berry Kajal Stick in Oriental Black is a sample sized product. I totally had to guess at the cost of this but I think it's a fair guess. This is a cute size that is good for the purse, I'm just glad it's in black because it's a useable color for me.
Approximate Value: $28.50

Initial Reaction: How cute is this box?! I love when they partner with brands because the boxes usually have special design...but also hate it because in past experiences, the stuff in the box is usually worse. Also I'm kind of annoyed with Birchbox this month because I saw the sneak peek where you could pick your own sample and I never got an email about that! Nor did I receive a lipgloss or a nail polish in my box this month, just saying...
1. $Marcelle New·Age 8 in 1 Power Serum is a sample size. This is going to get passed on. I have enough going on in my skincare right now and another serum isn't needed. I think this is something my mom would like though.
2. ~$2.50 Naobay Body Radiance Lotion is a sample size. I need to check my beauty profile again but I'm pretty sure I said no lotions and I'm getting a ton of them lately. I'm sick of all these, I didn't even smell it, it just went straight into my give/trade bin.
3. ~$1 Coastal Scents® Revealed 2 Palette is a sample of the eyeshadow COLOR HERE. I was actually excited about this. I have no reason to buy a new palette (I should do a palette post sometime in the future...) but I was still curious to test out the quality of this one since I've heard so much about it.
4. $6.50 Beauty Protector Protect & Treat Hair Mask is a sample size. Cute little container...enough for about one wash each with my hair, but I'm still really excited! I love hair masks, I actually use them exclusively now instead of conditioner (I wash my hair twice a week so this isn't too crazy) so I'm always excited to try out different ones!
5. $0.10 100% Pure Gingerade Shower Gel (Honey Cream Wash) is a sample size....So I got two ketchup packets of shower gel....No, no, no, NO! I'm sick of lotions and body washes, I mean I guess this is still good for travel but at this point I'd prefer foil packets over these things.
Approximate Value: $18.10

Beauty Box 5
Initial Reaction: Just judging by the sneak peek they gave I didn't have high hopes for this box at all. At this point I'm kind of regretting my spontaneous purchase but at least it's all paid for for a year and who knows, maybe one month it will wow me.
1. $12 Starlooks Kohl Eye Pencil in Obsidian is a full sized product. WHYYYYY! If you've been following my blog at all you will know that I've had this same product in my Project Pan for MONTHS now. Naturally now that I'm finally getting to the end of it, this lovely box has to send me a brand spankin' new one...*facepalm*
2. $7.99 Revlon Bold Lacquer Mascara in Blackest Black is a full sized product. Again if you've been following my blog you will know of my disdain for receiving mascara simply because I have a TON at hand. Luckily my mom is a huge fan of the Revlon mascaras and she is conveniently running low right now!
3. $2.49 Body Drench Candylicious Lip Balm in Peppermint Twist is a full sized product. I'll admit I thought this was a perfume stick at first and was upset, and then I realized it was a lip balm, and of course that didn't make it any better. Why would I want lip balm made for preteens??
4. $3.29 HASK Argan Oil Deep Conditioning Mask is a full sized (?) product. So on the card it's listed as full sized which is interesting because I find it hard to believe that a packet would be. Maybe this is a full sized one time use packet?? Anyways, I'm excited for this, I love love love hair masks and this looks like a good one! I'll definitely need to squeeze it out into a jar because it's pretty hefty and I feel like I might be able to get 2-3 uses out of it.
5. ~$3 Anna Naturals Glowing Mama Walnut Face & Body Scrub is a sample sized product. Scrub? Sign me up! I've never tried any walnut based products but I know there are a ton of benefits in that nut so I'm excited to try this out!
Approximate Value: $28.77 (the OCD in me is cringing at this weird cents amount)

Another disappointing month for all three of them. Do I have to pick a winner? I'm going to sound crazy this month but I'm actually going to be pick Beauty Box 5 simply because out of everything I'm the most excited to use the hair mask and the walnut scrub that came in it, and that 4/5 products were full sized. Ipsy came in second, and I'm sorry Birchbox, you just completely missed the mark. After getting all these I redid my beauty profiles for all three and it's just baffling me why the things I'm getting are not things I marked down. Everybody really needs to step it up next month!

What did you get this month in your subscription services?
