UnBoxing Match! August 2014 Ipsy vs. Birchbox vs. Beauty Box 5

Wow Birchbox came fast this month, like pretty much the first of the month and Ipsy was the last one to arrive, how the tables have turned...Anyways I can't even wait until the end just to express how upset I am this month, I really hope this isn't a continuing trend because I really look forward to subscription boxes every month and lately they've been a huge let down.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with these services, Ipsy and Birchbox are two custom beauty subscription boxes that come monthly. Both of these cost $10 a month and each arrive with 4-6 different goodies ranging from sad little foil packets to full size products! Beauty Box 5 costs a little more at $12 and delivers the same amount of goodies. I would say that typically Birchbox consistently delivers high-end skincare and hair care products with a sprinkling of makeup while Ipsy goes more for the mid-range items and is normally a lot of makeup items and Beauty Box 5 is mostly drugstore.

Initial Reaction: This bag is ADORABLE but I was really hoping it would be a cloth bag, this material kind of cancels out my love for it. All of these products are TINY and also all sample sizes...really disappointed doesn't even begin to cover it.
1. $5.25 Urban Decay Perversion Mascara is a sample size. Between an eyeliner or a mascara and they send me the mascara?? Seriously stop giving me mascaras I have more than I can handle and I'm perfectly happy with my drugstore brands. I came so close to tossing this in the trash in anger.
2. $4 Cali Cosmetics Evulcano Body Lotion with Sicilian Lemons and Volcanic Minerals is a sample size. Besides mascaras I'm really sick of body lotions. Again I have a set lotion I like to use so all these little extras are just taking up a lot of space in storage.
3. $8 Manna Kadar Cosmetics Sheer Glo is a sample size. I have oily skin, why would I ever want something that will make me look oilier??? I have no clue what to do with this thing...giveway?
4. $5.50 Jersey Shore Sun Mongongo Lip Conditioner is a full sized product. Okay I retract my earlier statement I guess this counts as full size, but another lip balm?? I guess I'm not completely mad about this one because reading reviews it appears to be a really good one. This will go into my lip balm bag and wait until I finally get around to it.
5. ~$1 Coastal Scents Forever Blush Sample Duo in Fresh and Elegant is a sample sized product. This has to be the least offensive item in my bag but I'm not a fan of the crappy flimsy packaging that Coastal Scents samples come in. I got eyeshadow samples before and it was the same tacky plastic. I always love me a good blush but I can see this turning into a mess eventually.
Approximate Value: $23.75

Initial Reaction: Grrr Birchbox...I'm never going to unsubscribe because the point system and the shop is amazing but I'm getting really upset about what I'm getting each month. However I must comment that their customer service is amazing! They accidentally sent me a product for thin hair (which I didn't even notice!) and almost right away they emailed me an apology for the mistake of not following my beauty profile and that the correct item was in the mail.
1. $8 ModelCo Bronzer in Shimmer is a sample size product. This is the sample I picked this month, I kind of wish I didn't pick one because I have a ton of bronzers but it's the principle of the matter (wasn't getting the emails so I needed to exercise my right to choose...) but I'm still happy with it. I love the cute little packaging and I'll definitely pick this up once I get through some other stuff I'm using already.
2. $10 SeaRX Moisturizing Anti-Wrinkle Face Cream is a sample size. Enough with the face creams! My oily skin is so picky that any type of leave on treatment for my face (except spot treatments) has to be specially picked out myself. I found a good home for this guy but I would like it better to not get these types of things anymore.
3. $1 Ojon rare blend™ oil Total Hair Therapy is a sample size. I LOVE this brand, hair oil though, I'm not crazy about. I'll still try it out. This is the sample in question that they sent me the wrong type.
4. $1 Harvey Prince Ageless Body Cream is a sample size. Usually I hate lotions but this stuff smells REALLY good so I'm kind of okay with this. But still it's a lotion...
5. $4 hello. Breath Spray is one item from a pack of three. Is Birchbox trying to send me a message???? So I guess this isn't the worse lifestyle extra to get, I've never really used a breath spray before but I'll toss this in my purse and try it out.
Approximate Value: $24.00

Beauty Box 5
Initial Reaction: I really wish that this came in nicer packaging. The sneak peek is a lipgloss so all I was hoping for was a wearable color.
1. $4 Nanacoco Lip Gloss in Secret Crush is a full sized product. This nudey pink is the perfect color for me and I'm glad this is what I got as my lipgloss!
2. $18 Pur~lisse Pur~protect SPF 30 is a sample size. I've gotten this exact sample from another subscription box recently and just like that one this got passed out. Sunblock is not my thing (I know, bad) but luckily for me it is for a lot of my friends so this will not go to waste!
3. $3.33 La Fresh Travel Lite Facial Cleansing Wipes is a sample size. The packaging kind of arrived gross, I'm not gonna lie it kind of looks like dried vomit...(sorry TMI) but I love this brand and I'll still use these, this little 8 piece set is the perfect weekend getaway essential.
4. $1.75 Style Essentials Nail Polish is one piece from a four piece collection. It kind of bothers me that there is no name for this polish, but I got this black glitter from the Fade to Black collection. I'm excited I don't actually have anything like this in my collection (weird right?) so depending on the formula I can see this being a fall staple.
5. $0.50 Novex Brazilian Keratin is a sample size. This is totally not what is on my card but I'm not mad because I was suppose to get a hair serum, which I don't use, whereas hair masks I use them on a weekly basis! I'm actually passing this onto my mom because she has pretty thin, frizzy and lifeless hair so I think she would benefit more from this than me.
Approximate Value: $27.58

Deja Vu? Another disappointing month for all three of them. I absolutely HATED Ipsy this month and Birchbox was just alright so August has to go to Beauty Box 5 and even so I wasn't overly impressed at all. Maybe next month will be the month where they all start to wow me again. Actually I just want at least one of them to impress me, is that too much to ask??

What did you get this month in your subscription services?
