UnBoxing Match! October 2014 Ipsy vs. Birchbox vs. Beauty Box 5

It's a monthly ritual now to look at sneak peeks and just be disappointed. I'm seriously close to cancelling everything except for Birchbox which honestly isn't wowing me but their point system and customer service just can't be beat. I will happily continue to buy from the Birchbox shop but I think I might be ready to cancel these other cheap ones in favor of putting my money towards more expensive ones such as PopSugar and possibly FabFitFun that will be filled with stuff I actually want and like.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with these services, Ipsy and Birchbox are two custom beauty subscription boxes that come monthly. Both of these cost $10 a month and each arrive with 4-6 different goodies ranging from sad little foil packets to full size products! Beauty Box 5 costs a little more at $12 and delivers the same amount of goodies. I would say that typically Birchbox consistently delivers high-end skincare and hair care products with a sprinkling of makeup while Ipsy goes more for the mid-range items and is normally a lot of makeup items and Beauty Box 5 is mostly drugstore with an even mix of products.

Initial Reaction: This bag whyyy! I was looking for a bag about this size and shape so at least it will get used but I think it is just so ugly. They are also so in love with the
1. $12 ECRU New York Acacia Protein BB Cream Beauty Balm for Hair is a travel size. Where did I ever say I wanted hair care products because I'm pretty sure I said none of this ever! This seems like the same thing I got last month which annoyed me already, they need to stop. Ipsy is seriously in danger of being cancelled if they don't stop sending me hair stuff!
2. $3.99 Jesse's Girl Mineralized Baked Shadow Powder in Esmeralda is a full sized product. I'm not horribly excited about eyeshadow but this color is lovely and I love baked products. I think I will actually use this so it's not a horrible miss for me and I'm happy it's not a loose pigment because those I will NEVER use.
3. $9.99 ROGUE by Rihanna is a mini size. Perfume WHY! Besides it being a perfume though it's actually a really generous size and the smallest size they actually sell. I'm impressed that it's not a perfume sample vial but at the end of the day it's still perfume. It's not the worst thing I've smelled.
4. $3 Starlooks Lip Gloss in Guilty Pleasure is a sample size. I'm completely guessing on value here cuz I can't find how much product is in the full size, but while I usually am not a fan of lip glosses, this color isn't bad. I might actually use this!
5. $5 Skyn Iceland Mini Glacial Cleansing Cloths is a sample size product. Ever since my trip to Iceland I've been intrigued by this brand but never actually picked anything up. I know it's just cleansing cloths but I love these wipes for my lazy days so I consider this a definite hit in my bag.
Approximate Value: $33.98

Initial Reaction: Darn no beauty blender! But this has got to be one of my better boxes in awhile despite the tiny sample sizes.
1. $2.90 Dr. Lipp Original Nipple Balm for Lips is a (tiny) sample size. I'm excited for this one. Even though I have more lip balms than I need (actually no I go through them ridiculously fast) I've heard a lot about this one in particular and I've been dying to try it.
2. $2.44 Miracle Skin Transformer Miracle Revival Mud is a sample size. When am I not excited for a good face mask?? Another one to add to my growing collection and I can't wait to try it out! I actually don't think I have any mud masks so this will be fun. Normally I would be peeved at a foil packet of mask because those get messy, but this was marked as a bonus item so I can't complain.
3. $2.62 TONI&GUY Cleanse Shampoo for Damaged Hair is a sample size. Usually I'm not a fan of hair products but at least with shampoo it will actually get used.
4. $3.01 TONI&GUY Nourish Conditioner for Damaged Hair is a sample size. I'm glad that they included the matching conditioner and that it didn't count towards my usual five items BUT it was still separate so I could review it too. I made $6 on this box!!
5. $3.22 Vasanti Detox Nutrient-Rich Purifying Facial Cleanser is a sample size. I've actually already sampled this before as a free gift with purchase. It's not bad, it's a solid facial cleanser that didn't wow me. But I'm still happy to get this because I know it's a product that works well with my skin.
6. $4.50 Lord & Berry Paillettes Eye Pencil is a sample size. I'm not crazy about the Lord & Berry pencils, I have a black one that I'm trying to Pan right now that I find is a little smudgy. This one is a black glitter bomb, so it will be fun for some nights out but I would have rather had something else.
Approximate Value: $18.69

Beauty Box 5
Initial Reaction: What is with this nail polish color?? Also I have the biggest collection of these chap sticks at this point it's a little out of control.
1. $2.99 Chapstick Hydration Lock is a full sized product. I have three of these now, I need to start using these up!
2. $19.99 Bellapierre Cheek and Lip Stain in Pink is a full sized product. What is with all these cream products in shocking pinks. Like when will I ever use this??
3. $5.49 The Spatty Extend Your Beauty Cosmetic Tool is a full sized product. I'm kind of really excited about this! I saw this on Shark Tank and thought it was genius and wanted one but never got around to ordering one and look BB5 sent me my very own Spatty!! This is the 6 inch version which works just fine. I'm a little mad because a week ago I just threw away a bottle of lotion that I admitted defeat to for getting everything out and I could have used this to scrape out the last bits!
4. $3.95 Nanacoco Nail Polish in Surfer's Dream is a full sized product. This blue is shockingly electric. I see this being a great color with play with for ombre but I wish I got another color...or not a nail polish at all.
5. $1.50 Lashem Picture Perfect is a sample size. I do love that they included a tip that this is a great primer! I'm not really worried about wrinkles yet but I'm always a fan of another primer! I'm kind of guessing on the price here.
Approximate Value: $33.91

There was a lot of cranky subscription hating at the beginning but it ended up being more of a meh. Birchbox is the undisputed winner this month and I'm really getting sick of the cheap stuff being sent with Ipsy and Beauty Box 5. How much longer before I should give up on Ipsy? I think maybe once my BB5 is up I will reevaluate Ipsy too. That is $20 I could be saving and possibly going towards a yearly PopSugar or a FabFunFit subscription!

What did you get this month in your subscription services?

  1. Just don't forget to keep reviewing your ipsy items! You have a chance to tell them you don't like hair products at the bottom of the review.

    Good reviews!
