UnBoxing Match! November 2014 Ipsy vs. Birchbox vs. Beauty Box 5

For those of you who are unfamiliar with these services, Ipsy and Birchbox are two custom beauty subscription boxes that come monthly. Both of these cost $10 a month and each arrive with 4-6 different goodies ranging from sad little foil packets to full size products! Beauty Box 5 costs a little more at $12 and delivers the same amount of goodies. I would say that typically Birchbox consistently delivers high-end skincare and hair care products with a sprinkling of makeup while Ipsy goes more for the mid-range items and is normally a lot of makeup items and Beauty Box 5 is mostly drugstore with an even mix of products.

Ipsy
Initial Reaction: I got this sinking feeling the second they announced the theme as "Girl Meets Glitter". Hello Ipsy it's November, glitter is a December color...And then they released that amazing first spoiler with all those high end brands where I decided I would be happy with any of them but one and guess which one I got...
1. $3.08 Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream Skin Protectant is a sample size. A "wonder" cream...out of GlamGlow super cleansers and Laura Mercier setting powder and brush THIS is what Ipsy decided matched my profile the most?? I am beyond livid at this. I mean I'll still use it but I would have been happy with ANY OTHER product in that group.
2. $6 Nicole by OPI in Guys & Galaxies is a full sized product. I'm on the fence with this. I love nail polish and I don't need anymore but this is an Ipsy exclusive shade and it's really pretty. There's iridescent flake glitter and fine silver glitter. I guess I'm not 100% annoyed at this product, but I'm glad I got this instead of any of the lip products because it's pretty clear lippies are the last thing I need now.
3. $4.50 clariSEA Sea Salt Solutions Instant Glow Powder Exfoliant is a sample size.  This is the one item I was really jumping for joy to get. I bought another clariSEA item off Birchbox (there's a review up somewhere) so I was excited to try another product from this company.
4. $18 Elizabeth Mott you're so FINE eyeliner in Glitterati is a full sized product. Great, I will have so many uses for a glittery liquid liner...heavy sarcasm here. Also ever since that traumatizing Elizabeth Mott mascara incident where it pulled my lashes out in chunks (actually don't think I ever wrote about that, but it happened) I'm extremely wary of Elizabeth Mott products. This might need to get passed on to a braver soul.
5. $1.38 Marc Anthony Oil of Morocco Argan Oil Volume Shine Hairspray is a sample size. How many times do I have to say hair products are not for me before they will listen. Third bag in a row where it contained a hair product. My quiz definitely says nothing to do with hair and everytime I review a hair product I always give it negative reviews. I'm so frustrated with you Ipsy.
Approximate Value: $42.96

Birchbox
Initial Reaction: Hmm what an empty box...
1. $4.88 Juice Beauty® Green Apple™ Peel Sensitive is a sample size. This was the sample I chose for this month and I'm very excited about it! I've heard a lot about this green apple peel and I've been dying to try it for myself. Even though I don't have sensitive skin I'm interested to see how it works out and possibly buying a full size of it if I like it!
2. $15 TONI&GUY Classic Shine Gloss Serum is a full size product.  Dear ALL subscription boxes..STOP SENDING ME HAIR STUFF! I can tolerate dry shampoos and hair masks, maybe even the occasional shampoo and conditioner set, but these creams, serums, sprays, etc. I NEVER use them! I triple checked and all of these things are definitely not marked as something I want and I always rate them really low in my reviews so I don't get why I'm still getting them!
3. $5.50 MAKE Dual-Phase Eye Makeup Remover is a sample size. I've been interested in this brand and while makeup remover isn't the most exciting thing to sample, I'm happy that they aren't wipes. This isn't the worst thing to get and this bottle is adorable for travel so I'll take it and be content with it.
4. $8 Laura Mercier Longwear Crème Eye Pencil in Violet is a sample size. Laura Mercier is equivalent to creamy so I'm looking forward to trying out this liner. I'm not crazy that it is in purple but it beats the hundreds of black liners I have waiting in the wings. I'm totally guessing at the price and saying this is maybe a third of the full size.
5. $0.83 Camille Beckman Platinume Gold Imperial Repair Hand Therapy is a. sample size This lemongrass and grapefruit smell is divine. I should be a little peeved about hand cream (I have quite a collection) but this reminds me of that delicious Tocca one I got sent a few months back so I'm happy to have it!
6. $1.25 Chuao Chocolatier Assorted ChocoPod in Maple Bacon is one bar out of a pack of eight. This was a lifestyle extra. I enjoy getting these treats and I'm not a huge chocolate fan but I am a bacon fan so this got devoured!
Approximate Value: $35.46

Beauty Box 5
Initial Reaction: All the cards in my box are bent and this is the tiniest "full size" product ever..Also the theme was "Gracefully Grounded" this month which was suppose to be about taking me time during the busy holiday season, yet they seemed to have sent a box full of travel themed products. So confused.
1. $2.99 HASK Macadamia Revitalizing Shine Oil is a full sized product. No to hair oils. No. How i this full size? Just look at the picture it is smaller than the travel sized body wash! This was the spoiler for the month.
2. $2.49 DenTek Floss Picks + Case is a full sized product. Floss picks in a travel case. Okay then...this might be gross and TMI but I definitely don't floss so someone else will get to benefit from this.
3. $4.47 Afterfeather Refillable Travel Bottles is one bottle from a set of two. It's strange that they send a TSA approved travel bottle but I must say that the dandelion design on it is SO cute. I definitely want to use this for something but as an everyday thing so I will need to figure out what to do with it!
4. $3.33 Laura Ashley Body Butter in Sweet Peony is one body butter from a set of six. Is this the same Laura Ashley that sold fancy children's clothing years ago? If so what a lovely nod towards my childhood! I'm complaining less about lotion lately since I went through a crazy lotion phase and used it religiously to drastically reduce my stash so I'm okay with this. Not crazy about the scent, very floral and a little grandma's house but I'll use it.
5. $0.53 Dove Deep Moisture Body Wash is a travel size. I have quite a collection of these and bottles. They are handy for refilling for travel so this will get used but I can't say I'm overly excited to have gotten this.
Approximate Value: $13.81

Even though I recently retook the Ipsy quiz I did it again this month as soon as my Glam Room went live because how can they be so off? I review all the hair products I receive as low as possible and same with cream/moisturizers. I don't think they look at those quizzes at all and I'm seriously annoyed at this point. Also the bag this month was so cheap, I'm not sure what is going on or if they had an issue coating the bags but one side of my bag was smooth like it was suppose to be and the other was gritty with glitter coming off, what is this?! At this point I'm firm about canceling if it doesn't get better by the time my BB5 subscription is up. Okay rant over. So the winner this month is clearly not Ipsy but it is Birchbox! I'm really excited for the adorable makeup remover at this point I don't even care if it doesn't work because I just love the bottle. I'm split on how I feel about BB5 and sending more tools than products this month, it seems like they just grabbed random things and threw it together but I guess that's how every month works. I'm just grateful they skipped the tacky nail polish this month.

What did you get this month in your subscription services?
