Skincare Hacks

These are always fun, discovering that common household items have a magical effect on skin! Here are a few tried and true methods that I want to share with you guys. As always keep in mind that what works for me might not work for you and to always do a spot test before proceeding to ensure that you aren't allergic to any of the ingredients used.
  • Toothpaste to reduce acne or soothe skin. My tried and true method when I'm really in a pinch is the old toothpaste on acne trick! It's important to use a white toothpaste and not the gel since the gel can burn your skin and of course to let it dry completely before going to sleep. The minty toothpaste soothes your skin and helps to dry out a pimple making it appear smaller in the morning. Remove the dried toothpaste carefully because scrubbing at it too hard will cause the skin to be irritated and inflamed.
  • Baking soda and lemon juice as a brightening exfoliator. This one is tricky to get the exact balance but you want enough baking soda to make it gritty while enough lemon juice to turn it into a thick paste. After you mix this together apply it onto our skin in circular motions. The baking soda granules will slough off any dead skin on the surface while the acidic lemon juice helps to brighten and even out skin tone.
  • Teabags to de-puff eyes. No one like waking up with puffy eyes so if you have the luxury of 5-10 minutes to lounge around in the morning be sure to pop two wet teabags into the fridge the night before. Placing these bags on your under eyes, the coolness will cause the blood vessels to constrict and the addition of caffeine aids in that too. This is a twist on the classic spoon in the freezer trick but it's much more pleasant.
  • Rub ice on your face to reduce oil. Effective yet not practical. I have found that rubbing a piece of ice on your face and then patting it dry with a clean towel is a great way to sop up the oil on your face. However if you're wearing makeup this clearly doesn't work. If you go fresh faced more often than not definitely try this trick out sometime, it's saved me a few time when I've been a shiny mess!
  • Rehydrate with a watermelon rind! This might be more helpful during the summertime when there's watermelon everywhere but the best thing I've always been told to do after spending a day in the sun is to the come inside and lay some watermelon rinds on your face. Yes you heard me right. It's very cooling to your skin and the vitamins and moisture in watermelon helps to rehydrate your skin and brighten it up.
  • Rub some honey or coconut oil onto chapped lips. I suffer from horribly chapped lips sometimes and after a good exfoliation session, sometimes a store bought chapstick just won't cut it. Slathering on a thick layer of honey or coconut oil is both tasty and super hydrating for your lips. Bonus points if you combine the two together for something seriously awesome.

  1. Great household items, I would love to try lemon and baking soda for glowing skin. These days I am using cream by lifecell for glowing skin and it even moisturises your skin.
