Review: Valentia Skin Detoxifying Clay Mask

This partnership if you can call it that with Brandbacker is pretty great. It gives me the opportunity to work some different brands and try some stuff that I might not have normally gotten my hands on to. Lately I've been working a lot of Valentia Skin Care and I've had the chance to try out and review a range of their products. When I was contacted about their newest product the Skin Detoxifying Clay Mask, I just knew I had to get my hands on it because it would be perfect for my congested skin. First let's take a look at the company itself as well as a little information about the product.

About the Company
The Roman Goddess of healing, Valentia, relied on nature’s gifts to heal the citizens of Umbria. Whether matriarchs seeking to maintain their youthful look or farmers seeking help for sun damaged skin, Valentia used berries, herbs, barks and other natural ingredients. We also rely on all natural ingredients due to their protective, preventative and corrective powers.

Just like our namesake, Valentia Skin Care products have been formulated with natural and organic cosmetic ingredients that will repair and protect the skin.

After performing extensive research into what skin care customers find most important, we found an overwhelming demand for skin care that is natural, free of toxins and paraben-free. Natural ingredients with an organic base have proven most effective at repairing skin damaged by sun or wind, preventing signs of aging such as wrinkles, dark spots, and reversing the effects of oxidative stress on the skin.

Key Ingredients
  • Kaolin Clay: Clay minerals draw impurities, improve skin tone, and tighten pores for smoother firmer skin.
  • Plant Stem Cells: Naturally decreases the level of pro-aging toxins and works to soother the skin, reduce redness, and improve evenness.
  • Spirulina: A botanical stimulant full of vitamins that hydrates the skins surface and contributes to tissue regeneration of the skin.
  • CoQ10: Lessens the appearance of wrinkles by reducing free radical damage and stimulating health collagen production.
  • Hibiscus & Cranberry Fibers: Both lend their anti-aging properties to firm and reinforce the skin, helping to reduce the creation of new wrinkles.

The first thing that struck me was it smelled very fruity. Berries, with a strong blueberry smell which is interesting since it's actually a blend of cranberries and hibiscus which I suspect is the culprit of the scent. Either way it's very pleasant and that already got a gold star in my book. The consistency of the mask is slightly thin of watery but then there are a few chunks of clay in there, so a pretty inconsistent texture throughout that ranged between firmer slimy pieces to more watery gritty areas. I found this unusual for a clay mask however still easy to work with the strategy being to take a small amount and spread it on evenly. One more thing to note about the overall appearance and consistency is that I noticed a small pool of liquid starting to form within the tub. This along with the uneven texture I suspect is due to the ingredients separating in the tub which leads me to believe this stuff doesn't have the best shelf life. If only after three weeks there is this type of separation, I'm not too sure about it. You can get a better look at this liquid in the picture below.
Almost immediately after I put it on my entire face felt very tingly which typically is a good sign because it's the feeling of the exfoliant working at scrubbing out your skin. You leave the mask on for 15-20 minutes and if you put on the thin coat as directed by the packaging I do find that the mask completely dries out during that time. Another thing about this mask is that it dries very unevenly. Some areas will dry to white while other places it drives transparent to the point where it looks like you didn't even put the mask on! I think this is again due to the uneven distribution of the clay throughout the product so this also leads me to question whether I'm using this correctly to its full extent.

When taking off the mask you use a warm wash cloth and it's suggested that you move in a circular motion as there are plant extracts (the grit!) that can further be used to slough off dead skin. Right off the bat my skin feels drier and tighter and I'll admit my first experience with this stuff wasn't that great. I wasn't a fan of how my skin felt afterwards but it was really the next day that changed my mind. I woke up with my face looking brighter and firmer. Little patches of acne were dried up with an improvement to the evenness of my skin tone. With the delicious smell and the great results I highly recommend this to anyone looking to even out your skin tone in both color and texture. A quick tip for the separation I found that happened, make sure you store this stuff in a cool and dry place (so NOT in your bathroom) and to simply take something to mix everything up before you use it.
