Things That Didn't Clear My Acne

In this next installment about my acne adventure I want to talk about things that didn't work out for me. Again, like I said before, just because these things didn't work with my skin doesn't mean it won't work with yours. Everyone has a different skin chemistry and stuff that works great for me could horribly break someone else out. I don't have very sensitive skin so it could be some of these products just weren't powerful enough for me but would work out great for you. I've had a long battle with acne going as far as an aggressive treatment of antibiotics and prescription strength topical creams. This isn't a comprehensive list of everything, but just things I had tried recently or I can remember.

  • Paula's Choice Daily Skin Clearing Treatment. I tried the both regular strength and the extra strength one and the regular one did nothing for me. The extra strength one was mildly effective at first but in the end it still didn't wow me. This is formulated with benzoyl peroxide, 2.5% for regular and 5% for the extra strength. This is suppose to be a preventative treatment that eliminates acne causing bacteria however I was still getting my regular breakouts while using this.
  • Paula's Choice Clear Normalizing Cleanser. This along with that treatment came in an acne set and between the smell and the runny consistency, it just didn't do it for me. This is suppose to be an anti-acne cleanser that dissolves oil and dirt in pores without drying out your skin. I just didn't see any improvement at all with use.
  • Mario Badescu Drying Lotion. I wanted this to work so badly. Everyone else raves about it and I've used a similar product that I got from a Memebox that was pretty effective but this did almost nothing for my pimples. It wouldn't dry them out overnight like its suppose to and it was also messy. The pinky white powder flaked off everywhere and would stain my pillows as I slept. This is formulated with salicylic acid for drying out acne and calamine to soothe the skin, but like I stated in my previous post, salicylic acid typically isn't as effective for my skin so that was probably why this just didn't work out for me.
  • Mario Badescu Drying Mask. This cigarette mask was disgusting and I could never stand the smell to put it on all over my face. I used it as a spot treatment instead and like the drying lotion it would flake off and stain my pillows. I classify this as a fail simply because I'm unable to use it as intended and also because there wasn't any noticeable changes from using it. This sulfur based mask was also very thick so the scrubbing required to get it off my face was very irritating to my skin and probably caused a reverse effect to what they're trying to achieve.
  • Derma e Very Clear Acne Spot Treatment. A salicylic acid spot treatment that really had no effect on existing pimples nor was it preventative.
  • Dr. Lin Skincare Acne Spot Corrector. Same as the spot treatment above. I find that most of these spot treatments aren't nearly powerful enough for me. I'll still use up what I have in my stash as something lightweight to put on in the morning but in general I can save my money on these things since they really don't do anything for me.
  • Pure Tea Tree Oil. A lot of people swear by dotting on pure tea tree oil onto pimples to dry them up and soothe irritation. Again I didn't see any improvements in using this as a spot treatment. However I must say it is quite nice to drop the oil into my humidifier when I have a stuffed up nose, really clears those sinuses up and helps me sleep better at night.
  • Pure Passionfruit Seed Oil. Another popular oil treatment is using pure passionfruit seed oil as a moisturizer because it is suppose to hydrate while also help with the production of excess oil. Yeah, didn't help with me. In fact I think it made my skin oilier. It did make my skin very soft though, so maybe if you had dry skin this would great.

The last two things I want to mention are diet related. I saw no improvement from reducing sugar intake or eating less greasy food. Again, this was just for me so I'm not giving my blessing to eat all the french fries in the world because your acne won't get better if you don't, but for my personal body chemistry and diet I just didn't see a change from this.
